Environment

Strenghts

For many years, Electrabel has been keeping ahead of current environmental issues. The equilibrium between the 'three Es' - Economy, Energy, Ecology - forms the foundations of its environmental policy. The results of this policy enable the company to meet increasingly ambitious environmental goals of society and growing expectations of the customers.

  • Generating facilities whose performance is among the highest in Europe in terms of energy efficiency and emissions of greenhouse gases, SO2 and NOx (thanks mainly to nuclear and gas-fired power stations and hydroelectric power stations)
  • 60 % of the generating facilities operated by the Group in Europe is managed on the basis of a standardised environmental management system (EMAS, ISO 14001) leading to constant improvement in environmental performance
  • Promotion of technologies with high energy efficiency (CCGT, cogeneration)
  • Increasing electricity generation from renewable energy sources (wind farms, hydroelectricity, biomass) in several countries in Europe
  • Active participation in numerous projects aimed at controlling greenhouse gas emissions (the World Bank's Prototype Carbon Fund, FACE, CASTOR, etc.)
  • Offering the opportunity to buy green electricity or to invest in green energy projects
  • Tailor-made services helping customers to save energy and to meet their environmental obligations
  • A real determination to adopt measures and agreements that go beyond the obligations laid down by law
  • A sponsorship policy supporting initiatives for protecting the environment
  • Maintaining biodiversity in cooperation with environmental organisations (nature areas, nesting boxes for peregrine falcons, etc.)
  • Measures aimed at reducing 'local' environmental hazards: soil clean-up, noise reduction, better siting, architectural improvements, etc.
  • Treatment and recycling of waste and by-products (making maximum use of fly ash and gypsum, reduction of radioactive waste production)
  • Multidisciplinary research programmes resulting in the application of less polluting technologies
