Waste

ONDRAF manages, the producers pay

The responsibilities of public bodies and nuclear operators are clearly defined

In Belgium, the management of radioactive waste is entrusted by the law to a public body set up in 1980: the ONDRAF (Belgian Agency for Radioactive Waste and Enriched Fissile Materials). For their part, the producers of radioactive waste - whether industrial, scientific or medical - take responsibility for financing this management. Thus, both current and future costs linked to the entire management of the spent fuel cycle have been integrated into the total cost of the nuclear kWh for many years. These are based, on the one hand on the current costs, which are known, and, on the other, on estimates increased by a significant margin of uncertainty, imposed by ONDRAF.
